I’m a birder, gardener, and freelance editor, writer, and consultant. Most of my journalism experience is in science, health, and the environment, and I write an advice column for Slate about work problems. (If you have a work problem, and who doesn’t, please send it to me.) I’m a former editor in chief of Scientific American; I ran the health and science desk at The Washington Post; and I’ve been an editor for National Geographic, Slate, Smithsonian, and Science. I have a Ph.D. in cognitive neuroscience from the University of California at Berkeley. I’m active on Bluesky and hope to see you there and here at LWON.
