You don’t have to be

|

What I want is

someone to tell me

that I don’t have to be a skinny girl

or a curvy girl

or a pretty girl

or a strong girl

or a girl at all.

And so I touch my own face with both hands and say: You are the thing that is you. The thing that words don’t capture, nor pictures, nor your body, even though when it goes all the things that are you go, too, wherever they go—into dirt into stone into plants and little bugs. So love the flesh that holds you. Love the sky and earth that hold you. Love the water that carries you on its heartbeat-blood-run through the world. Love the cradle of your bed and the creatures that lick your hands and the ones that fear you and the ones that would eat you, if given the chance.
